Community outreach services are a vital part to the Center's success, reaching and teaching thousands of children and professionals annually. All of our community initiatives and programs aim to raise awareness and education to improve the lives of children with hearing loss.

Early Identification and Intervention

Free Hearing Screenings

Throughout the year, skilled CHS audiologists and technicians visit various sites to perform hearing and speech testing for underserved children. Most of the children who participate would not be tested otherwise. In 2012, 4,347 children were screened at low-income school districts and various community centers throughout Houston.

We provide free education services for parents and early intervention specialists about communication options and learning techniques for newly diagnosed infants and toddlers. Through this program, over 100 families and 2,000 professionals have been educated.

The Gus McHam Learning Insitute

This education program provides training for parents and professionals in the community and at CHS on the latest issues, teaching techniques and technology. We host 2-3 conferences per year led by seasoned experts in the fields of speech pathology, audiology and deaf education.

University Training Program

The university training program establishes and develops relationships with local and national universities in order to train future professionals in the fields of audiology and speech-language pathology who work with children with hearing loss. We provide one of the only opportunities for students in the Houston area to observe therapy and classes with deaf children. The training also has a hands-on component which is uniquely sought after!
