Professionals at CHS are committed to helping children with hearing loss reach their full potential by teaching them to listen, speak and read. In today's Staff Spotlight, we're highlighting our Director of Speech Therapy Services, Amy Cantu!

What is your official job title?

Director of Speech Therapy Services; Listening and Spoken Language Specialist

Describe your role at CHS.

I am responsible for managing the daily operations of the speech clinic and ensuring our clinic meets the needs of our patients.  I currently manage 6 full-time and 2 part-time SLPs and our clinic serves over 170 clients per week. It is my job to make sure that every one of our patients reaches their full potential in our clinic.  As an Auditory-Verbal Therapist, it is my job to make sure my clients make as much progress as possible with their listening and spoken language skills and that their families know every week how to help their child.  I am responsible for assessing the individual needs of my patients and helping their families understand how to meet those needs.  I also help the families through their journey and provide support wherever I can.  I also serve as a mentor to other professionals, provide education to professionals in the community, and collaborate with others to ensure optimal outcomes for my patients.

How long have you worked at CHS?

I have worked at CHS for 11 years.

Where are you from?

I grew up close to Baytown, so I have lived in the Houston area my whole life.

What is your favorite thing to do in Houston?

I LOVE going to brunch.  I am always looking for new brunch places and that is usually where you can find me and my family on Saturday morning.

What is your favorite restaurant in Houston?

El Tiempo.  You can’t beat their margaritas and fajitas.  Also I devour about 7 baskets of chips and green sauce every time I go!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

The beach.  I really want to see Fiji and stay in one of those huts that are over the water and have the glass bottom.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would be the first thing you would buy?

I love to travel, so I would probably book all of the vacations I have ever wanted to go on and make that happen.

Which three words describe you?

Maybe caring and busy?  I can’t think of one more.  Can I request a life line and ask Peyton (fellow Listening and Spoken Language Specialist at CHS)? She could definitely give me 3, haha!

What is your dream job?

I am very lucky because working as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist at a place like CHS was my actual dream job.  I’ve known since high school that this is what I wanted to do and I was very lucky to start my career at CHS doing what I love.  If I have to choose something else, I will say painting.  I love to paint and enjoy being able to express myself creatively in a different way.

What is the best book you have ever read?

I am a huge Game of Thrones fan so those books are my favorite.  I also love Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.

I’m happiest when:

I am spending time with my family, hanging out on the beach, and painting (not necessarily all at the same time, lol).
