Professionals at CHS are committed to helping children with hearing loss reach their full potential by teaching them to listen, speak and read. In today's Staff Spotlight, we're getting to know one of our Speech-Language Pathologists, Amy Huddleston!
What is your official job title?
Speech-Language Pathologist, Intern in Auditory-Verbal Therapy
Describe your role at CHS.
I get to help the cutest kiddos learn how to listen and speak by empowering their parents to be their primary interventionists. I get to teach parents how to emphasize listening and create a language rich environment for their kiddos at home, so that listening and speaking becomes a way of life for them and not just something they do once a week in my speech room. I love that I have the opportunity to work with and teach kids AND their parents. I truly believe it is the best way to help our kiddos reach their full potential and plus, it’s fun!
How long have you worked at CHS?
I started at CHS as a speech-language pathology extern in January 2016. After graduating with my master’s degree in May 2016, I was hired as an employee and become an official member of the speech team in June 2016.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Temple, TX, which is about an hour north of Austin.
What is your favorite thing to do in Houston?
Most of my favorite things to do in Houston revolve around eating good food!
What is your favorite restaurant in Houston?
Speaking of eating good food…this is a tough one. I have a lot of favorite restaurants, but I think my top favorite is either Teotihuacan Mexican Café or Lupe Tortilla, depending on what type of Mexican food I’m in the mood for ;)
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
For the last several years, my dream vacation has been to go to Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. I have always enjoyed traveling to places with beautiful scenic views and the Canadian Rockies have been on my list to see for a while. My husband and I will actually be traveling there this summer to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. I guess I will have to think of a new dream travel spot after that!
If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would be the first thing you would buy?
The practical side of me wants to say pay off my mortgage, but the animal lover in me wants to say that I would buy an animal shelter big enough for all of the stray animals in Houston…or at least big enough for the ones in our neighborhood!
Which three words describe you?
Loyal, Mindful, and Systematic
What is your dream job?
I don’t have kids yet, but if I wasn’t an SLP I think the only other thing I would want to do is be a stay at home mom someday.
What is the best book you have ever read?
Most of the books I’ve read over the last few years have been textbooks and now I’m working on some AVT books…not sure anyone is interested in hearing about those, but how about we go with my favorite movie instead, which is Miss Congeniality!
I’m happiest when:
I get to spend some time relaxing in nature with my husband and our 100 pound white lab, Sampson.
