The Auxiliary of the Houston School for Deaf Children was founded in 1970 by Mitzi Weiss, whose son was born profoundly deaf. Mitzi experienced firsthand how difficult it was to find resources for her son to learn to communicate orally, and she wanted to make sure other Houston-area parents of deaf children did not have to endure the same struggle.
Mitzi created the Auxiliary as a medium to raise funds for HSDC so it would continue to flourish for years to come. Dedicated members of the Auxiliary hosted successful fundraisers, including the Center's first Gala, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown in 1980. The Center returned to the same hotel this past April to host its 70th Anniversary Gala.
Funds and awareness raised by the tireless efforts of hundreds of Auxiliary members were vital to the Center’s success.
