Impact of Support

Hearing loss is the nation’s #1 birth defect and can have devastating effects on language development.

Here’s what we know:

  • Hearing loss affects 14.9% of children in the United States[1]
  • Deaf children who do not learn to communicate orally graduate from high school with average reading skills ranging from a 2.8 to 4.5 grade level compared to a 10th+ grade reading level for their oral counterparts[2]
  • 37% of children with only minimal hearing loss fail at least one grade[3]

Here’s what we do:

  • The Center for Hearing and Speech has a 63-year history of providing identification and intervention services to children with hearing impairments.  The Center remains the only comprehensive facility in Houston.
  • In 2009, CHS served 2,652 children from 185 ZIP Codes and 18 counties throughout Houston and Southeast Texas.
  • We continue to provide all services on a sliding scale to ensure care for all children regardless of their economic condition or health coverage.
